The March Buck of the Month is here and, fittingly for something releasing in the spring, this month’s choice is a limited run of the 838 Deploy automatic.

June 2022 – at Blade Show, of course – is when we were all first introduced to the Deploy family. These are models in the growing “EDC automatic” category, pieces that seem first and foremost suited for the same daily work that our manual folders are expected to do, rather than the more specialized tactical roles autos have been historically associated with. The Deploy, both the Mini and full-size (which this BotM is a variant of), are single action automatics, deployed with a button located on the show side.

This special edition is sporting a pretty wicked “shadow forest” camo pattern anodization: rich yellows, browns, and blacks, suggestive of piles of leaves in the fall. All hardware is matching black, as is the blade – of which more anon. The handle scale material remains aluminum, and the reversible, deep carry pocket clip that has been a part of the Deploy series since the beginning is still here.

Most notable in terms of alterations on this piece is the blade, which has been bumped up from S35VN to MagnaCut – and not only MagnaCut, but MagnaCut heat treated by one of the masters in the field, longtime Buck partner Paul Bos. Performance on MagnaCut is going to be good no matter how you slice it (promise, no pun intended), but the Bos heat treat is always a welcome boost in our book.

The Buck of the Month Deploy is available now and limited to a scant 500 pieces. Go forth if you want it.
