The People Behind the Edge: Spyderco’s First 50 years
by Tim Stetzer2026 marks the 50th anniversary of Spyderco. To commemorate the milestone, the company has introduced a limited edition Native 5 unlike any knife it has produced before. It’s a fitting tribute, but the anniversary knife is really just the latest chapter in a much larger story.
There’s no question that Spyderco is one of the most influential knife companies in the industry today. That’s somewhat ironic when you consider that when Sal and Gail Glesser founded the company in 1976, they weren’t making knives at all.
As I began researching this article, I found myself digging far beyond product catalogs and company timelines. Along with Spyderco’s own history and the excellent SpydieWiki reference, one of the most valuable resources came from my friend and fellow knife writer Clay Aalders. Clay generously shared a previously unpublished interview he conducted with Spyderco founder Sal Glesser. That sit down with Sal offered a fascinating look into the philosophy behind one of the knife industry’s most influential companies.
Many folks today take for granted quality folding knives with pocket clips, one handed opening mechanisms, premium blade steels, and good ergonomics. Those features have become so commonplace that many newer knife owners simply accept them as the way folding knives have always been. Anyone born before the 1980s or so knows that wasn’t always the case.
Spyderco didn’t invent every one of those ideas, but few companies did more to refine them, and popularize them than they did. They showed the value of these then new concepts to everyday knife users to the point that they rapidly became industry standards. Spyderco didn’t come up with these innovations just for the sake of being different; they did it to solve problems. That willingness to ask, “Can this be made better?” has shaped Spyderco from the very beginning.
