Across the country, a growing number of retail workers are choosing to unionize — including many who work for some of the outdoor industry’s most celebrated brands. On Friday, workers at a Patagonia store in Manhattan, New York, started the process of joining a labor union. A “supermajority” of the SoHo store’s roughly 30 employees signed cards indicating their desire to join the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). The workers are asking Patagonia to voluntarily recognize their unionization effort. If the brand declines, the employees will hold a vote to determine whether they officially join RWDSU. It’s only the…

I die a little bit inside every time I see the word “hybrid” in a ski boot description. It’s historically a euphemism for “great at nothing.” So I was feeling standoffish from the start with the Scarpa 4-Quattro GTs, less than eager to sink days of testing into a boring product and lots of uphill hours in an alpine boot masquerading as a legitimate touring option. I slipped the 4-Quattros ($670) on my feet and walked around. Huh, I thought to myself. Maybe this won’t be so bad after all. I grabbed a bundle of skis and set out toward…

My take: Destination weddings should be banned. Until we balance the broader social scales, however, I’m stuck ponying up the dough to fly out to Cabo, or Maui, or whatever. If I can tack the ceremony onto the return leg of some far-flung place I actually want to visit, though, it’s enough of a balm to get me in the airplane seat. Or at least a more palatable use of airline miles. Pulling this off requires a tailored travel closet, and this January, I packed the multipurpose Unbound Merino Travel Pants as I legged it down to Costa Rica, hitting…

A 90-year-old grazing law just collided with one of the most controversial conservation efforts in the American West. In January 2026, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued a Proposed Decision to rescind grazing permits that allowed the privately owned bison of American Prairie, a Montana-based nonprofit conservation organization, to graze federal allotments in central Montana. Those permits were approved in 2022 after environmental review. Now, the agency says it lacks authority under the Taylor Grazing Act to authorize that use. I live in the middle of this fight. On my town’s main street sits the American Prairie visitor center.…

By Beyond Seclusion Posted in #Guns I love the saying, “have your cake, and eat it too”. What if you had the capability and power of a hunting cartridge like the .308 for both eyes open close quarters shooting could very quickly switch to a LPVO (Low Power Variable Optic) with 7X magnification and hit out to 500 yards easily? Would that have your interest? [Catch Robert Sadowski’s explanation on the meaning of LPVO.] Before we get to that, just a brief background and history on the M1A. The Story Most folks who love shooting and hunting…

Jeep finally brings back the Cherokee, this time as its first traditional hybrid. The 2026 Jeep Cherokee is much bigger, much more fuel-efficient, and is overall a much better vehicle than its predecessor. The compact utility vehicle segment is the largest in the U.S., and one Jeep has been absent from since the last generation (KL) Cherokee ended production in February 2023. For 2026, it has grown up in all the ways, especially in terms of size and refinement. I got the chance to drive the new Cherokee around the Malibu canyons outside of Los Angeles, for a total of…

KÖNIGSLUTTER, GERMANY (23 February 2026) Mehler Protection presents SCILT, a new close-range protection system to counter drones attacking land vehicles from short range and low angles. The system is presented for the first time at Enforce Tac 2026. Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) increasingly no longer approach only from above. Instead, they emerge from terrain, ditches, flanks, and rear sectors, appearing at very short distance and leaving minimal reaction time. SCILT is conceived specifically to address this immediate close-in envelope, where conventional mobile air-defence systems and unit-level counter-UAS solutions reach detection and defeat limits. SCILT is conceived as a dedicated last…
