The U.S. Transportation Security Administration is attempting to “clarify” their rules regarding traveling with ice and other frozen liquids after an airport passenger apparently froze a knife in ice. In a social media post over the weekend, TSA officials said the discovery was made by officers at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas. “We would like to clarify that when we said if it’s frozen it can fly…we were specifically talking about liquids. Freezing your knife in ice is super awkward,” the post said. The headline is misleading. I was expecting to find the knife actually encased in ice –…

They were the first hikers we’d seen all day, and they were loaded up. The pair—a father and son, they told us—were heading up into the hills above Curecanti National Recreation Area in Colorado for a weekend. I would have believed they were equipped for a week: Each of them hefted what must have been 80-liter packs, fully swollen with gear, with a tent strapped between the toplid and body of the dad’s pack. And dangling from their belts, each carried a four-inch long Buck knife in a sheath. People seem to forget that the Bugout was actually invented as…

Some boots make an impression for a season or two. The Scarpa Maestrale ($799) and Maestrale RS ($899) have stayed with me for more than a decade. I first skied a version of the Maestrale in 2010, and it has been a constant in my backcountry kit ever since. It has carried me through early-season firm snow in the Tetons, thigh-deep laps in Utah, hut trips in Colorado, and cold ridge walks on fourteeners. I added the Maestrale RS to my rotation about 5 years ago and was immediately struck by its warmth, power, and more assertive downhill performance. Each…

Learn More Ask a dedicated skier or snowboarder what they rely on most during a storm day, and you’ll often hear the same answer: ski bibs. But bibs don’t only work for powder days. With added coverage, secure fit, and pockets in all the right places, snow bibs for men and women are one of the smartest pieces of technical winter apparel. But beyond aesthetics, what really sets the best snowboard jackets apart is technical performance. In this guide, you’ll find jackets with high waterproof ratings, fully taped seams, and PFC-Free DWR coatings to keep moisture out. Breathability matters too — pit zips, mesh-lined vents, and breathable…
