By mid-June, it dawned on me like it does every year — summer is hotter than ever. As sweat poured down my face and I caught my breath at the top of a dusty trail climb, I was thankful to have two soft flask water bottles along for the run. I can’t get away with skimping on water like I can in the spring and fall on the roasting trails around Eagle, Colo., during the summer. Nothing plummets my will to go running like a scorching hot day. I’ve been carefully selecting my trail running kit this season to venture…

The 626-horsepower twin-turbo V8, raised air suspension, and 2.7-inch-wider track might have you feeling supersonic, but they just weren’t enough to help make it the “toughest, most capable, and most luxurious” Defender. What is an off-road company to do to make its top-spec SUV tougher? Create the 2026 Defender Octa Black with more black trim, of course. Loads of it, with a mix of gloss and satin finishes. Oh, and have them shuttle around…

Before I lost it while climbing out of a canal lock on a long boat trip down the Atlantic coast, my long-term EDC blade—an older version of the Gerber Harsey Air Ranger that’s no longer made—had done it all. With that single blade, I had cleaned deer, ducks, squirrels, and a wild hog; carved fuzz sticks; and removed a rotten toenail in the Canadian backcountry. It still cleaned up nicely enough to cut a wedding cake when the caterer failed to bring her own knife. But I’ll confess: I will cheat on a knife in a sharp skinny minute. And…

If you’ve been waiting, patiently, perhaps for years, for Civivi to release a fillet knife – well, your time has come at last. Civivi is calling it the Shawka, and they naturally went all out with the mechanical flourishes. The fillet knife is a demanding format, in the sense that it requires the blade to have very specific properties. It needs to be fairly large – larger by far than the average folding knife – and it needs to be flexible, in order to be maneuvered around delicate bones and in between the skin and meat layers of a fish.…

Don’t make the same mistake I did. Unless you’re from Texas, you probably saw the name of this knife and pronounced it like it looks: “Bex-Ar.” Turns out, the word is more like a toddler hollering for a stuffed animal at the carnival. Forget the “x” is there, and you’ll have it right: Bear. That said, it wasn’t the name that drew me to the knife. What caught my eye initially was the blue camo print on the handle. It’s unique and wonderfully done. As I checked out the specs, I realized this knife had to be one of the…
