Dawn patrol, by definition, starts before sunrise. Skins on, boots snapped partially tight, I started striding into the darkness. Within 10 minutes, I had stripped down to my base layer sun hoodie. As the sun rose, casting orange light on the peaks all around me, I picked up the pace. My softshell ski pants, Stio’s new Tracksetter Pants, were put to work. Between the stretching, breathing, and ongoing protection from the crisp morning air, I was impressed by the Jackson Hole brand’s new pants.  You’re not grabbing softshell pants like the Tracksetters for every ski day. The “soft” in softshell…

Climbing access on the East Coast is a tricky thing: Since most of the land here is privately owned (unlike the West), public access can change quickly. If a landowner decides they don’t want climbers on their land — that’s that. The same thing happened 22 years ago at Red River Gorge, a classic sport climbing destination in Kentucky. A landowner revoked public access to two major climbing areas: Oil Crack and the Arena. And they stayed empty for over 2 decades — until now. On April 21, the Red River Gorge Climbers’ Coalition (RRGCC), the nonprofit that manages climbing…

Tiberius Aerospace, a modern defence technology company built to empower the UK, US and their global allies with next-generation weapon systems and AI-powered solutions, has successfully demonstrated, for the first time, that a liquid-fuelled ramjet projectile can be launched from a NATO-standard 155mm howitzer, achieve ramjet ignition and perform as intended in flight. This liquid fuel breakthrough, achieved during recent test firings of its Sceptre system in New Mexico, represents a fundamental shift in what artillery systems are capable of delivering on the modern battlefield. Sceptre is a 155mm precision-guided munition designed for full compatibility with existing NATO-standard artillery systems.…

The 100th Buck of the Month has arrived, a new and (as usual) very limited version of the 112 Ranger. This is a stylish and high-performance rendition of this close relative of Buck’s most famous folder. These days, the 112 Ranger’s fan base can stand comparison even with that of the almighty Folding Hunter. Maybe this is because its dimensions are more amenable to the modern EDC aficianado’s needs than its bigger brother – or maybe Buck addiction has seized the knife community and, upon acquiring their first of the company’s famous folders, enthusiasts immediately need another model to lust…

The wildfire that consumed the Grand Canyon’s North Rim last summer was one of the most destructive in its history. Named the Dragon Bravo fire, it burned through more than 145,000 acres of the park and destroyed dozens of historic buildings — including the Grand Canyon Lodge. It closed much of the park for months. In the immediate aftermath, many observers asked how a wildfire spread out of control at one of the country’s most popular national parks. Even Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs weighed in, demanding an investigation into the National Park Service’s actions. This week, during testimony before a…

What If? – L85A4 I found this image online of a British SA80 equipped with the Strategic Sciences Corporation Multi Function Muzzle Device, an innovative 3D printed suppressor recently adopted by the Canadian Armed Forces for use on their new Canadian Modular Assault Rifle. Due to its over the barrel dosing, it only adds 1″ to the overall length. What if the UK followed suit? Major revisions to the Endangered Species Act (ESA), a hallmark law of American conservation, were set to go before Congress for a vote this week. The bill would have changed the listing process for imperiled species and weakened several other aspects of the law. After major outcry from lawmakers and conservation nonprofits, House Speaker Mike Johnson unexpectedly pulled the bill from the floor. The Bill The ESA, passed in 1973, helps protect endangered or threatened species. Essentially, if a fish, wildlife, or plant is listed, its habitat is protected, and government agencies have to come up with recovery plans to…
