After a massive storm deposited feet of snow across the Sierras, 15 backcountry travelers were caught in an avalanche near Truckee, Calif., on Tuesday. Six of them were successfully evacuated by search and rescue (SAR). According to reports on Wednesday, nine members of the party remain missing. That makes this the most significant avalanche burial incident in the U.S. in the last decade. The group included 11 skiers traveling with four guides from Blackbird Mountain Guides. They were returning from a hut trip near Frog Lake and were navigating avalanche terrain as they exited. The avalanche occurred around 11:30 a.m.,…

You don’t go out in public with your home defense gun, so it can be as large as a shotgun or carbine. You can’t really hide that on your person when going out to dinner. When we get into conversations on concealed carry, the #1 point of interest seems to be…

Just as I pass the outskirts of town, I peg the accelerator. Both electric motors immediately engage and force me against the seatback. The C-HR charges forward with the pull of a Porsche and the smoothness of a bullet train. Moments later, I momentarily see triple-digit speeds. Whoa! This is not your father’s C-HR. Or, perhaps, your older siblings’ C-HR. After all, Toyota introduced us to the last C-HR in Los Angeles in 2016, ahead of its 2018 model year debut, which ended after 2022. That cute, but wheezy sub-compact crossover rocked all of 144 horsepower. This one? More. Returning…

Most flipper knives require a bit of actual flipping to open the blade. But with the WEKnife Speedliner, a late 2024 introduction designed by Tashi Bharucha, it’s more like pulling a trigger. WEKnife sent me a Speedliner Flipper Knife with a titanium handle around the holidays. I hadn’t sought it out, but it arrived with a brief note of thanks and carried my name on the handle. I didn’t think much of reviewing it until now, a couple of months later, as it has really earned a spot in my daily rotation. While the Speedliner seemed to garner a lukewarm…
