  • Wisconsin resident Keionna McGowan faces charges of second-degree reckless homicide in the fatal shooting of her neighbor
  • The victim has been identified as dentist Akintunde Bowden
  • “Our hearts go out to Dr. Bowden’s family, friends, patients and the many lives he impacted,” Milwaukee Health Services, Inc., where Bowden worked, said in a statement

A Wisconsin woman has been charged in connection to the death of a neighbor after she allegedly shot him during a dispute about loud music.

Keionna McGowan, 27, was charged with second-degree reckless homicide in the fatal shooting of dentist Akintunde Bowden, 41, according to WITI-TV, WDJT-TV and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by the outlets, police officers in Brown Deer were called to an apartment complex to investigate a report of shots fired on April 19. When they arrived, a woman — later identified as McGowan — yelled, “Help! He’s in my house, number 207.”

At the apartment, officers found a man lying face down on the entryway with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen, per the criminal complaint. They attempted life-saving measures on the man, but were unsuccessful.

The Brown Deer Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, April 26.

McGowan reportedly told investigators, per the outlets, that she had been listening to music inside her apartment when she heard “loud, aggressive banging” at her door. She allegedly looked through her door’s peephole to find a “large man who appeared to be intoxicated,” and he asked her to turn down the music, and she agreed and shut the door, per The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

However, she said, per the criminal complaint, that Bowden returned, kicking her door, so she allegedly grabbed her gun and fired a shot at him when he made a motion to kick her door again.

Bowden’s fiancée, Theresa Bell, was interviewed by police and told them, per WITI-TV and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, that she and Bowden lived in the apartment below McGowan’s and that she had been away at a concert that night with her mother. She claimed, per the court filings obtained by the outlets, that she had last contacted Bowden through FaceTime at around 10:30 p.m.

She claimed that the resident living above them would occasionally play music too loudly, but that her fiancé had never confronted her about it and was not one to lose his temper, according to WITI-TV. She also said, per The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, that their previous encounters with the upstairs resident had been “civil.”

Milwaukee Health Services, Inc., where Bowden worked as a dentist, shared a statement on Facebook announcing Bowden’s death. In the statement, the company said that his “impact” on patients and staff “has been immeasurable.”

“Dr. Bowden’s contributions to the health and well-being of our patients and community were extremely impactful. His Leadership, Compassion, and vibrant personality will forever remain in our hearts,” the company added. “Our hearts go out to Dr. Bowden’s family, friends, patients and the many lives he impacted. MHSI joins you in mourning the loss of a remarkable servant leader and health care advocate.”

McGowan’s bond was set at $15,000, and she remained in custody at the Milwaukee County Jail as of April 24, per The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. She is next set to appear in court on May 5.
