  • The body of a Colorado man who was visiting Trinidad and Tobago was found in a fishing village this week
  • He’d had dinner and drinks in Castara and allegedly went to buy marijuana before his death, police said
  • He was discovered lying face down on concrete steps with a metal object in his back, authorities said

A Colorado man traveling to Trinidad and Tobago was found dead earlier this week and police are investigating it as a homicide, with a suspect in custody.

The body of Christopher Brown, a 43-year-old builder from Silverthorne, was found on Wednesday, Nov. 26, in the fishing village of Castara on the island of Tobago, police said, according to the Associated Press.

Authorities had responded about 10:35 p.m. local time to a report of an unresponsive man in Castara.

Investigators think Brown was fatally stabbed and he was found suffering from several wounds on his body, with a metal object sticking out of his back, according to the AP. He was lying face down near a flight of concrete steps close to the Castara Government Primary School, the Trinidad Daily Express reported.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Earlier that night, Brown had gone out to dinner with his girlfriend and another couple, according to the Daily Express.

After dinner, the four went to a nearby bar for drinks, according to the AP, which reported that a police report states Brown told his friends he was leaving the bar to go buy marijuana.

On Thursday, Nov. 27, Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro told the AP that authorities had “a suspect … currently in custody,” but neither their identity nor a potential motive have been released.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Tobago’s Division of Tourism said Castara is normally safe and this is “the first such act of violence” there.
