NEED TO KNOW

  • An autopsy reveals Monique Tepe was shot several times and had an additional contusion in her leg
  • Her husband Spencer Tepe had been shot several times, including once in his head
  • Monique’s ex-husband Michael McKee has been charged with aggravated murder in connection with the killings

A medical examiner’s report says Monique Tepe, who was found dead alongside her husband Spencer Tepe in their home, was shot nine times, including once in her face.

The double-murder of the beloved couple in Columbus, Ohio, garnered national attention and left their families reeling.

Now, Franklin County coroner’s reports obtained by PEOPLE show the extent of injuries the couple suffered at the hands of their alleged killer.

Monique, 39, was shot in the right cheek and sustained nine gunshot wounds overall, the coroner noted in the report.

She was shot in her torso multiple times, including three times in her chest. In addition to the gunshot wounds, she also had an “irregular green” contusion in her left calf.

The coroner listed Monique’s cause of death as “gunshot wounds of head, trunk, and extremities with visceral, skeletal, and soft tissue injuries.”

The coroner’s report said Spencer had been shot seven times, including in his head.

The Tepes were killed in their home around dawn on Dec. 30, two weeks after their fifth wedding anniversary. They left behind two children, ages 3 and 1, who were found physically unharmed a few feet from the parents’ bodies.

Monique’s ex-husband Michael McKee, a 39-year-old surgeon in Illinois, was arrested days later and has been charged with murder in connection with the killings.

Months before the killings, McKee was sued for medical malpractice, according to court records previously obtained by PEOPLE.

A friend of Monique’s says the ex-husband could not tolerate Monique’s newfound happiness.

“He thought she could not live without him,” the friend previously told PEOPLE. “That she needed him. So for her to thrive [in her new marriage], that just destroyed his fragile little ego.”

On the night of the killings, authorities allege, McKee drove 900 miles to the couple’s residence.
