As I learned from one of my favorite podcasts, The Dollop, several years back, the story of the Bowie knife is rife with murky details.

What we do know is that a large fixed-blade knife with a crossguard and a clip point played a critical role in a 1827 incident that came to be known as “The Sandbar Fight.”

 

I could probably get away with posting nothing but Bowie content.
