The heir to a multibillion-dollar retail business was arrested this week in connection with his father’s death. In 2024, Jonathan Andic was hiking with his father, Isak, in the Montserrat Mountains near Barcelona, Spain, when Isak fell down a steep embankment, tumbling 300 feet. The 71-year-old founder of fast-fashion retailer Mango died at the scene.

Initially, his death was investigated as an accident. But in 2025, police announced that the case had become a homicide investigation. Jonathan, the primary heir to his father’s business fortune, was singled out as a suspect. He was the only one with his father when he fell, and inconsistencies in statements he subsequently made to police raised red flags.

On May 19, 2026, Jonathan was arrested at his home in Barcelona. He is currently being held in pre-trial detention with a bail set at 1 million euros.

A Suspicious Fall in Montserrat

The incident occurred while the Andic family was hiking together in the Montserrat Mountains north of Barcelona. It’s an area characterized by steep cliffs, ravines, and jagged limestone outcroppings. It is a beautiful landscape, but an unforgiving place to fall while hiking.

Emergency crews responded, deploying a helicopter, ambulance, and a specialized mountain Search and Rescue (SAR) unit to the scene.

The case was closed in January 2025, but a judge reopened it in October, reframing it as a homicide and placing Jonathan at its center. The new investigation focused on tensions between the father and son after a failed business succession process in 2014. When he died, Isak was a non-executive chairman at Mango. His net worth was $4.5 billion according to Forbes.

Catalonia’s High Court said on Tuesday that authorities have released new details shedding light on the case, but the official probe remains under a judicial seal of secrecy.

The Andic family has confirmed that Jonathan is being questioned by police and that he is “fully cooperating.” He denies any wrongdoing. According to Reuters, a spokesperson for the Andics said the family is confident in Jonathan’s claims of innocence.
