This article originally appeared on The Inertia. Two missing hikers kicked off a search for a spree killer in Utah this week. Now, the manhunt has ended with a suspect in custody and the discovery of a third body. The ordeal began Wednesday, when Linda Dewey, 65, and Natalie Graves, 34, failed to return from a hike in central Utah, near Capitol Reef National Park. When their husbands went to the trailhead to look for them, they found both women dead and their car missing. The ensuing manhunt would go across four states and uncover another body, 86-year-old Margaret Oldroyd.…

There’s a reason why soldiers in the early days of the Global War on Terror were spray-painting the stems of their safety glasses. It wasn’t about aesthetics or unit cohesion; it was about survival. A glint of light reflecting off glass or the distinctive silhouette of night vision devices could be the details that turn a concealed position into a target. That reality hasn’t changed. If anything, it’s intensified. As optics improve and adversaries become more sophisticated, the margin for error shrinks. The things that make you visible don’t just compromise your position, they compromise your mission. Blue Force Gear…

From frozen Teton trailheads to windblown Colorado fourteeners, a high-quality down jacket is a mandatory year-round essential. Spring weather is notoriously fickle; you can be hiking in a T-shirt one minute and facing a 20-degree temp drop the next. Over the last five years, our team has tested more than 60 models to find the most versatile, adventure-ready options on the market. In the past year alone, authors Ryan Kempfer and Chris Kassar have put…

By Steve Tarani Posted in #Skills We all share similar concerns about being “frozen with fear.” Rather than wait to react to a physiological response such as freezing, how much more of a tactical advantage would it be to affect fear before you find yourself staring at a deadly threat? What can you do right now to proactively control fear or even prevent it? You can change your perspective and manage your expectations by using inoculation, visualization and desensitization. Change Your Perspective You can either control your fear or allow your fear to control you. Fear can be effectively managed by…
