When you think of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., you likely imagine the alpine grandeur of resort skiing and snowboarding. What often goes overlooked, however, is the surrounding landscape of forests, wilderness areas, and pristine alpine lakes. A wider lens opens up one of the most geologically dynamic landscapes in North America. Volcanic energy, tectonic forces, and glacial activity shaped (and, in some cases, continue to shape) this corner of the Eastern Sierra with features that inspire both awe and exploration.  When Michael Washington and Sam Reese set off to uncover the story behind the geology of Mammoth Lakes, they targeted four…

Rampart Range Day 26 – Galvion During last year’s Rampart Range Day Galvion collected data for their helmet sizing app. This year, they continued the process but for the new Hellbender helmet rather than the Cayman series. Additionally, they collected data on some new helmet accessories I’m not allowed to show yet. I rally have no idea why I’m looking up but I must have had a good reason. From bears becoming food-habituated to traffic collisions with elk, outdoor recreation has always posed a thorny problem. How can people enjoy the great outdoors without harming or interfering with wildlife? The National Park Service (NPS) has been working for decades to reduce human–wildlife conflicts. Now it’s got a new recruit: a specially trained dog named Blue. She is a certified Catahoula Leopard Hound who recently started working at Grand Canyon National Park to help shepherd wildlife away from busy visitor areas. Blue was “selected for her strong herding instincts, trainability, and calm temperament,” the NPS said in a press release.…

By Jeremy Tremp Posted in #Guns For many shooters I know (including myself), customization isn’t a question of if, but when. By their nature, firearms are intensely personal tools. They’re also personal statements. It’s the appeal of taking that personal tool and adapting it to your own preferences and needs that drives these efforts. These can be functional adaptations, aesthetic ones, or both. From the moment Springfield Armory introduced the 9mm Echelon, it was evident that modularity and customization were in its DNA. Its modular design (through its serialized “Central Operating Group” chassis), optics-ready “Variable Interface System”…

Rampart Range Day 26 – DNS Alpha This is the latest incarnation of the DNS Alpha GORE-TEX coverall but beefed up as an overgarment for freefall parachuting. It also includes a removable insulated liner. The rear incorporates stretch panels. This image offers a good view of the sleeve and thigh pockets as well as Velcro fields to attach equipment. Here you can see the full length zippers, thigh stretch panels, and internal booties. And finally the left upper quadrant of the coveralls. I’d call it a Fallschirmspringeranzug. Hopefully, we’ll see these begin to see these show up soon for US…

This is the ski you might hate to love — because you want to think you’re destined for pro models. K2’s new Blur 79 ski is a narrower frontside silhouette that’s great for beginners, but the design is plenty fun and capable for most intermediate all-mountain skiers. Budget-conscious skiers will especially appreciate that it ships with integrated QuikClik bindings. The bundle saves on the purchase price and mounting costs. As one of the narrowest skis I’ve field tested, the K2 Blur 79 ($599) is more suited to frontside skiers working to improve their technique on groomers. This ski also works…

Meeting a 4 MOA standard is not the problem. Maintaining it across the force is. The Army does not struggle to teach marksmanship. The Army struggles to maintain it. That is not criticism. It is just reality. Marksmanship is a perishable skill, especially in formations where range time is limited and priorities constantly compete for attention. Most Soldiers are not lacking motivation. They are lacking repetitions. The standard itself is straightforward. The Army is looking for roughly a 4 MOA shooter, with 6 MOA generally considered acceptable. In practical terms, that means keeping rounds inside a 12-to-18-inch area at 300…

GORE-TEX Brand Celebrates 50 Years of Innovation When you say “waterproof breathable”, you immediately think of the company that created the category, GORE-TEX. This month, it celebrates its 50th anniversary of keeping us dry. During a recent visit to WL Gore & Co’s headquarters in Delaware I had a chance to get a look at the history of this iconic brand. One of the most amazing pieces in their archive is this prototype garment which was worn during a camping trip by Founder Bill Gore’s family. This no-frills parka design even features taped seams and led to the first crop…
