It’s a little too easy (at least for me) to dismiss alarming weather events. But there’s no denying that much of the country is about to get hit by a serious winter storm — and nothing reminds you of the importance of solid gear like a bone-chilling freeze. With several months of winter still ahead for many of us, it’s not a bad time to check out much of this week’s new gear. Comfy sleeping bags? Check. Down-filled mattresses? Check. Winter Olympics-style accessories? Got it. Cozy alpaca sweaters? Oh yeah, baby. Find all that and more in this week’s Emerging…
We’ve already taken a look at the new for 2026 stuff from Civivi – but, as promised at the end of that article, its sister label We Knife Co. brought its own batch of brand new blades to Vegas this week. Here are some of the highlights. Anglex If there’s a theme this year from the We side of the tracks, it would have to be “techy;” a lot of the inbound models have a highly modern look and feel, such as the in-house designed Anglex. This big boy has a 3.89-inch wharnie with aggro, super-modern geometry. Combined with its…

Cold plunge and chiller combos often cost $3,000 or more, which is why durability should be a factor when considering one. Often, a chiller will go out, or the tub itself can crack or degrade over time, especially when exposed to the elements. A cracked tub can throw that $3,000 investment right out the window. Which is why, when I saw the sturdy and no-frills build of the Eternal Ice HD Pro Ice Bath + Chiller ($3,476), I thought it might be able to handle the great outdoors. The tub is made from 45mm linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), an extremely…
Skinning up Cameron Pass, the cool crisp air blew through the trees, and snow floated above me. The new Black Diamond Dawn Patrol Pack fit seamlessly on my back as I cut a skin track up the mountain. The pack carried all my gear, clothes, and food — it was almost an extension of myself, moving freely with me as I climbed. At the top of the run, I switched from uphill to downhill mode and sipped water from the insulated hose on my right shoulder. I removed my skins, stuck them easily into the pack’s interior, and then carved…

Learn More In the last year, the knife industry faced some challenges that could have had some long-lasting impacts. From the closing of a primary U.S. steel supplier to threats of tariffs that disrupted supply chains and pricing, 2025 was, in certain regards, a hot mess. During that time of unrest, rumors of a new super-premium knife steel started to float around the internet and in circles where knife nuts gathered. As political and economic factors around the industry have cooled somewhat, it’s time to see…
MagnaMax has been in development for a long time. When I first proposed the idea for MagnaCut to Crucible and Niagara in June 2019 I also proposed a high wear resistance version I was calling “stainless 10V.” This version was intended to match the combination of toughness and wear resistance in the non-stainless grades K390, Vanadis 8, and CPM-10V. K390 has developed some popularity in recent years from Spyderco using it in many knives. This steel hits a real sweet spot for having good toughness with very high wear resistance. That high wear resistance gives it excellent edge retention. MagnaMax…
