FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — While man transportable robotic systems, MTRS, aren’t new to the U.S. Army, the way instructors at the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence’s Chemical Defense Training Facility, CDTF, are incorporating the robots into training is transforming the way chemical Soldiers perform site exploration. According to Master Sgt. Rolando Silguero, CDTF noncommissioned officer in charge, the facility began a three-phase integration process of the man transportable robotic system in the summer of 2025 to professional military education curriculum, specifically the CBRN Senior Leader and Captains Career Courses. “The primary focus is to include operating procedures as well…

Over 300 million people visit sites managed by the National Park Service (NPS) every year. In the past, the agency has done its best to manage and control visitors to popular parks and monuments. Long lines at entry and parking lot snafus can easily affect people’s experiences. Large crowds also have a greater physical impact on these protected natural places. Recently, however, the NPS made several changes to make it easier to explore certain areas of national parks. It’s a controversial move that has garnered support from some and vehement opposition from others. While the new rules will expand access,…

Outdoor gear has increasingly threaded the needle between practical upgrades and aesthetic appeal, and today’s Emerging Gear has loads of both. A cooler that costs more than a PlayStation 5? … Yeah, that’s here, too. Find all that and more in this week’s Emerging Gear. Gear for Adventurous Dogs (Photo/Ruffwear) Ruffwear already makes some of the best gear for dogs that GearJunkie has tested. Buck Knives’s thirteenth stealth run has arrived and, while thirteen is sometimes considered an unlucky number, it won’t be for any fans of Buck’s most famous folder. The new stealth run 110 Auto Elite dresses up the automatic variant of the knife in all the right ways. The Folding Hunter family tree has more branches than Starbucks at this point, with not only major format variations – such as the Auto Elite – but, within these variations, smaller editions and riffs, making tracking quite difficult – but maybe we’ll leave that to the Buckologists out there and just enjoy each…
Across the country, a growing number of retail workers are choosing to unionize — including many who work for some of the outdoor industry’s most celebrated brands. On Friday, workers at a Patagonia store in Manhattan, New York, started the process of joining a labor union. A “supermajority” of the SoHo store’s roughly 30 employees signed cards indicating their desire to join the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). The workers are asking Patagonia to voluntarily recognize their unionization effort. If the brand declines, the employees will hold a vote to determine whether they officially join RWDSU. It’s only the…

I die a little bit inside every time I see the word “hybrid” in a ski boot description. It’s historically a euphemism for “great at nothing.” So I was feeling standoffish from the start with the Scarpa 4-Quattro GTs, less than eager to sink days of testing into a boring product and lots of uphill hours in an alpine boot masquerading as a legitimate touring option. I slipped the 4-Quattros ($670) on my feet and walked around. Huh, I thought to myself. Maybe this won’t be so bad after all. I grabbed a bundle of skis and set out toward…
My take: Destination weddings should be banned. Until we balance the broader social scales, however, I’m stuck ponying up the dough to fly out to Cabo, or Maui, or whatever. If I can tack the ceremony onto the return leg of some far-flung place I actually want to visit, though, it’s enough of a balm to get me in the airplane seat. Or at least a more palatable use of airline miles. Pulling this off requires a tailored travel closet, and this January, I packed the multipurpose Unbound Merino Travel Pants as I legged it down to Costa Rica, hitting…
