The SIG P385 FCU, Recoil Dampening System, and MagStrap

The SIG P385 FCU, Recoil Dampening System, and MagStrap

I took photos of three main features of the new SIG P385 which have raised a lot of questions.

The SIG P385 FCU, Recoil Dampening System, and MagStrap

First off, here’s what the Fire Control Unit look like. The upper, larger FCU is for the new P385. The smaller FCU comes from the P365.

It too is a MIM part which is machined rather than the stamped steel construction of the P320 FCU.

Although they aren’t exactly the same, many believe they just increased the size of the P365 FCU. You be the judge.

The other feature you can’t see from the exterior of the P385 is SIG Recoil Dampening System which has been also referred to simply as SRDS.

Inside the P385 (lower) frame you can see the blue material. That is the SRDS which acts as a buffer during recoil. I shot the P320 immediately followed by the P385. Between SRDS and the low bore axis, I could definitely discern less recoil. Its performance will become even more obvious once SIG begins to introduce metal frames.

I also wanted to share the three different MagStrap sizes to accommodate palm swells. They can be user configured.

I’ll wrap this up with a photo of a bin filled with developmental frames dating back over a year. These are just examples of different features the instructors at SIG Academy would evaluate during development of the P385. Each week, engineers would bring out several 3D printed frames and the instructors would provide feedback. The most promising would be 3D printed in a higher quality material as functioning prototypes. The instructors would then conduct live fire to further refine the frames. This iterative process continued until the company was satisfied.
