7 Overlooked Outdoor Adventures in Illinois

Here’s a little Midwest secret: Adventure runs wild in Illinois, if you know where to find it.

Yes, that Illinois. Right here in, as they say, “the middle of everything,” bison roam open prairies, ancient cypress trees rise from secluded waters, and craft brewers forage wild mushrooms from nearby forests. From Chicago to other Midwestern metros, dwellers of the grid-bound world can easily target weekend getaways or extend adventure-based journeys with the full family.

Activity surprises stretch from the edge of Lake Michigan to the banks of the Mississippi River. You just have to venture beyond those city limits to discover the lesser-known outdoor experiences that best reveal the wild and rugged side of Illinois.

1. Go Hike With a Goat

Here’s your chance to hoof it with your favorite furry ungulate. Hike with the herd at Hoof It Goat Treks near the charming northwestern Illinois city of Galena. Goats lead hikers along a 1.25-mile trail through thick forest. Trip options include a goat trek and bonfire, or a Hoof It + Sip It hike paired with a local wine tasting.

If wine doesn’t float your goat, pitstop in Galena’s Main Street district for a root beer flight tasting at Root Beer Revelry, then stroll one of the country’s best-preserved 19th-century downtowns. Soak in the city’s rich history on a trolley tour or haunted pub crawl.

If you’d rather look ahead, the 8.8-mile crushed limestone Galena River Trail provides a casual cruise, while Chestnut Mountain’s Farside Bike Park offers the state’s only lift-access mountain bike park, plus an Alpine Slide for non-riders to enjoy the must-see views of the Mississippi.

Extend your stay at a boutique B&B like the historic Jail Hill Inn or at amenity-packed resorts tucked into the rolling hills from Eagle Ridge to the winter ski slopes at Chestnut Mountain.

2. Spot Bison

The Prairie State has an abundance of bison; spotting a herd is never a stretch. At Nachusa Grasslands, more than 100 bison roam freely, helping promote conservation and restoration of Illinois’ native prairie lands. Several hiking trails explore the 4,000-plus acres of restored tallgrass prairie, notably the 4.2-mile Big Jump Prairie Trail that goes beyond the half-mile interpretive loop by the visitor center, near the historic cabins at White Pines.

Want to see more? Book a tour with The Nature Conservancy to observe the Nachusa bison up close. Consider additional trails through the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie near Wilmington, as well as the Burlington Prairie Forest Preserve near the twin riverfront towns of St. Charles and Geneva on the western outskirts of Chicago.

3. Explore Sandstone Cliffs

No Illinois adventure list is complete without a trip to Shawnee National Forest. This Midwest hiking hotbed features some of the state’s best trails thanks to Shawnee’s unique location at the southern tip of Illinois.

Wedged between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, the rugged terrain escaped Ice Age glaciers that leveled surrounding flatlands, creating a biodiverse oasis of oak-hickory forests, vast wetlands, and geological rarities like the stunning 100-foot sandstone cliffs of Garden of the Gods (accessed via Observation and Indian Point trails).

Other must-sees include the Pomona Natural Bridge (an easy hike to a 90-foot arch), the surprisingly lush Little Grand Canyon, and the popular Trillium Trail and Giant City Nature Trail in Giant City State Park near Makanda.

Beyond the hikes, Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour runs guided zipline adventures from treetop to treetop, while Giant City Stables outfits horseback rides along remote trails. Overnight at the Giant City Lodge or in a treehouse at the Timber Ridge Outpost & Cabins.

4. Ride Across the State

Pedal nonstop from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River (and back) on a network of bike trails that encircle most of northern Illinois over 535 miles. The Grand Illinois Trail connects over 40 individually managed bike corridors, some paved but mostly limestone-gravel back roads.

Start with smaller segments like the Illinois Prairie Path (one of the country’s first rail-to-trail successes), the historic I&M Canal Trail, or the scenic riverside Fox River Trail.

One must-ride segment: Joliet to Bureau, which runs 96 miles alongside a canal, hand-dug in the mid-1800s to connect Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River. The route rolls through Buffalo Rock State Park and Starved Rock State Park, both of which allow camping (reservations and/or permits required) and easy access to the waterfall serenity of Matthiessen State Park, just 20 minutes west (via bike). Bed down at the Starved Rock Lodge.

5. Sip Foraged Beer

Happy hour has never been wilder than at Scratch Brewing Company. This southern Illinois microbrewery in Ava features a rotating list of nature-centered beers crafted with foraged ingredients from local woods and an on-site farm. Sample everything from the pale ale, brewed with “dead leaves” harvested in autumn, to the farmhouse ale (wild carrot and nettle) or the saison from hand-picked chanterelle mushrooms.

You can forage your own fare in the nearby Pyramid State Recreation Area along 16.5 miles of multiuse trails. Morels pop up between late March and May, with peak mushroom harvesting in April — allowed after 1 p.m. to avoid any run-ins with hunters during what is also peak turkey season.

Finish your forage with a feast at 17th Street Barbeque, boasting award-winning ribs and sauces, or at family-owned Faye cafe and restaurant, home to scratch-made baked goods and breakfast all day. Move comfortably into your food coma at the nearby Walker’s Bluff Resort.

6. Wander the Labyrinth

Take a meditative walk in the nation’s largest prairie labyrinth at Lakeview Nature Center, located on the west side of the state in Macomb. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has no dead ends. Instead, it leads you along a single winding path inward and back out again. Quiet your mind on this seven-circuit adventure and enjoy a centuries-old tool for meditation and reflection — with a unique twist that’s only on the Illinois prairie.

Stroll through more walking oddities at the world’s largest interactive Monopoly board in Macomb, or continue the calm at nearby Spring Lake Park and Campground, where you can roll along three mountain bike trails, kayak on the 230-acre lake, book a campsite or cabin, or simply relax by the water. Slide into deep sleep at the Heartland Lodge, a hunting and vacation resort.

7. Paddle Through Cypress Stands

Few Illinois adventures can rival the view of the Chicago skyline from a kayak on Lake Michigan. But for a truly unexpected paddle adventure, drift through the lesser-visited cypress swamps of the Cache River State Natural Area.

Launch a self-guided tour through 14,000-plus acres of protected wetlands, or go with a guide from Cache Bayou Outfitters, which offers daily kayak and canoe tours plus rentals. You’ll swear you were deep in the Everglades’ mangroves or Louisiana bayous thanks to the gauntlet of towering cypress stands draped in Spanish moss — an otherworldly waterway you won’t find anywhere else in the Midwest. Spoiler: You’re actually in southern Illinois.
