Next up from Jack Wolf Knives: the Eureka, a new single blade jack knife that will coming out under the Gateway series – which means entry level, but enthusiast-approved, materials, and a sub-$100 price point.

Take a good look at the Eureka’s handle – does it remind you of anything? No? Well, then you must not be a dog owner, because that shape is called a dogleg, due to the joint-like bend in the middle, pointing spinewards. The history of the dogleg is a bit hazier than other, more common traditional knife patterns, further complicated by the fact that it is similar to other historical profiles, but the dogleg has been around for well over 100 years in one form or another, from manufacturers both here in the States and in the United Kingdom.

Jack Wolf’s Eureka pairs the comfortable dogleg handle to a 2.83 spear point blade. Mostly straight until it turns up quickly to the tip, the edge geometry addresses a hefty swathe of EDC needs and will withstand day-to-day wear quite while thanks to 14C28N, which isn’t a current-gen steel in the strict sense, but one that we would consider to be a current gen budget steel; that is, something that calibrates the expectation for what users can expect in terms of performance on a relatively affordable knife. Opening is achieved via a long pull nail nick.

One of the most laudable aspects of Jack Wolf’s Gateway Series is that it still manages to offer customers the expanded handle material options the company is well-known for in its main line. When the Eureka goes up for sale next week, it will be available in six different handle options, including abalone, smooth purple bone, Richard Brautigan-inspired Watermelon Sugar Camo Carbon CF and, perhaps best of all, linen Micarta in an extremely handsome, damn-near-perfect KnifeNews orange. Weight will vary a tad with handle materials but hovers in the 2.1 oz. range across the line.

The Eureka will be available next Friday, August 21, via authorized dealers.
