Odor-resistant T-shirts aren’t a new idea — but weaving gold, silver, copper, zinc, and volcanic ash into bamboo throws the kitchen sink at the grail-like stink-free shirt goal.
These multiple mineral additions are supposedly meant to reduce odor in performance T-shirts, even after repeated days of sweaty trekking. And they’ve clearly found an audience. A Kickstarter for HercShirt V5.0 has already raised almost $298,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
At GearJunkie, we’ve tested stink-inhibiting shirts for close to 20 years. Back in 2012, editor-in-chief Sean McCoy tested a (then) new-fangled technology of activated carbon infused into merino wool for months, running almost daily in the same shirt. The result was impressive. Fast forward to 2026, and HercLéon’s latest release adds a bunch of stink-inhibitors to a single shirt.
Wenceslaus Muenyi founded the brand in 2017. He started researching fabric technology after a trip to Iceland, where “clothes packed alongside worn ones in his bag came out smelling like all the rest,” a press release said. Based in Minnesota, the brand’s fifth release — a fitted crewneck tee — is engineered to resist smell for days to weeks, depending on which shirt you buy.
“The idea started with a backpack of stinky clothes in Iceland. That one bad trip turned into years of work on the chemistry between fabric and the human body, which we now call HercFiber. HercShirt V5.0 is what that work looks like today, a shirt people can wear for weeks without thinking about laundry or how they smell,” said HercLéon founder Muenyi.
‘Biology-Informed Clothing’
The HercShirt V5.0 is the latest attempt by founder Muenyi to create an odor-resistant shirt. Of course, HercLéon is far from the first brand to claim odor reduction through a proprietary fabric blend. That’s almost de rigueur for the outdoor industry at this point.
But Muenyi wants to accomplish his goal through “biology-informed clothing.” This burgeoning subset of the performance-wear market tries to avoid synthetic materials and chemicals in favor of approaches derived from the study of nature.
The performance tees from HyperNatural, which I reviewed recently, are another good example of this trend. The brand weaves jade mineral dust and crab chitin into the fabric, which reduces odor even after repeated wears, and makes the cotton base a bit more breathable. For those of us trying to avoid synthetic fibers, fabrics made from natural fibers with “natural” approaches to performance are an attractive offer.
And while the additions of gold and silver at HercLéon are certainly head-turning — they’re essentially a budget version of even crazier apparel from brands like Vollebak, which makes expensive shirts and jackets from unusual materials like copper, carbon fiber, and “silver-plated fibers.”
HercShirt V5.0: How It Works
Kickstarters feel more and more elaborate these days, in both presentation and design features, and the HercShirt V5.0 is no exception.
HercShirt V5.0 is the fifth product from HercLéon to use its proprietary HercFiber. Rather than a single material, it’s a base fabric with varied combinations of metals and other compounds. According to the brand, the included elements have these benefits:
- Copper and silver: Permanently spun into the yarn, these metals “target the bacteria that feed on sweat and cause the strongest smells.”
- Zinc: Tackles sulfur-based compounds tied to sweat from intense exercise.
- Gold: It “supports how the other active elements perform together within the fabric.”
- Volcanic ash: A natural zeolite, it adsorbs external smells such as smoke and cooking smells and reduces moisture.
- Two additional proprietary elements complete the system: “HercLéon is keeping their exact composition confidential.”
The Kickstarter offers three versions of its the HercShirt V5.0, each with an increasing amount of “elements,” and a higher price tag to boot.
- Budget ($40): One active element; rated by the company for up to 3 days of continuous wear.
- Standard ($70): Four active elements; rated by the company for up to 14 days of continuous wear.
- Max ($80): All seven active elements; rated by the company for up to 30 days of continuous wear.
There are also several benefits to just trying these out. The shirts come with a 100-day return window, 365-plus-day size exchange, and a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty. That ain’t too shabby. Though delivery isn’t expected until November, it looks like the campaign will make enough money to offer colors other than black, like charcoal gray and navy blue.
