Mark forwarded this on to me from Robert Wilson of the Moran Foundation and Museum. Apparently they have had a bit of excitement, and while it will take some time to fix things up, no one was hurt and all indications are that it is full steam ahead programming wise. They got lucky. The HVAC, not so much.
It’s been a very interesting and busy couple of weeks here at the academy. Classes are filling up quickly and our Open Forge time is very popular and our 3rd Saturday Open Meetings have been great. Last month (February) We had our Life Member and Owner of EdgeWorks Knife & Supply Sean Norris here for a talk on sharpening and equipment, he left the group wanting more. This month our safety officer & Life Member Justin Richwagen gave a great talk on Laser Engraving…Great Job Justin.
Rolling back a week today, as I sat here in the office at 12:00 noon I heard what sounded like an explosion and the building shook. I checked the security cameras right away and saw what I thought was smoke in the shop. It was not smoke but rather dust and debris from a car hitting our building at around 35 MPH. The car missed our propane line by about 12″ (which was good) however our A/C outdoor units will never be the same again. Both units were destroyed, the car hit the shop side of the building and pushed the wall in about 6″. Keep in mind this is a 2″ X 6″ with cement board exterior siding, and a 3/4″ plywood wall with Stainless overlay.  The impact broke the siding all the way up to the soffit. I don’t have the estimates yet but I would expect it will be $75,000 plus!
Our sign project is underway, the county was out to the site marking utilities, I signed the permit application last week so now we wait. For upcoming dates In April we will have an open house with demos on the 4th. Bill’s knives will be on display. We have two classes to sign up for the 10th-12th Is the Beginners Damascus class and our friend from Ohio Butch Sheely will be here the 25th and 26th for a Tomahawk Class. On the 16th Jay Henderick will present Wood Lined Sheaths & Tips & Throat. Be watching for more information for our May events as we have moved our Moran Picnic to the 16th. We will celebrate our Volunteers this day as well as Bill’s Birthday.
Keep it short and sweet…Stay in touch and check out the pictures -RW
