Two people were killed and at least four were injured in a shootout spurred by an alleged long-standing feud between two families in Greece.

The incident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, in the village of Vorizia on the Greek island of Crete, according to authorities, per the Associated Press and Greek news outlet EPT News.

A 39-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman were killed as a result of the incident, according to police, per the AP. At least four additional people were taken to the hospital by emergency services due to injuries, and two of those people are under police guard for their alleged involvement in the shooting.

An investigation into the incident is underway in the small mountain village, per the AP.

The outlet further reported that the shooting was the result of an alleged long-standing feud between two families, which initially started as a dispute over the use of grazing lands in the rural area. The AP also stated that there was an explosion in the village on the evening of Friday, Oct. 31, which has been linked to the feud and subsequent shooting.

EPT News stated that charges of homicide and attempted homicide were brought against two people allegedly involved in the shooting on Sunday, Nov. 2. They further stated that they were the same two people under police guard at the hospital.

Authorities are seeking out three other people who they believe were involved in the shooting, per EPT News.

PEOPLE reached out to EKAB, Greece’s national emergency medical service, as well as the Hellenic Police, for comment on Sunday, Nov. 2, but did not receive immediate responses.
