A New York City mother is facing criminal charges after allegedly stashing her dead baby in a closet.
On Saturday, Jan. 24, at 7:36 p.m., police were called to perform a wellness check at 209 Veronica Place in Brooklyn, the NYPD said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.
Upon arriving at the apartment, officers found a 1-month-old female unconscious and unresponsive, per the statement.
The infant was discovered in a duffel bag inside the closet, police said, according to ABC 7 New York, NBC New York and the New York Daily News.
EMS responded and pronounced the infant — identified by the outlets as Adonnys Kendall — deceased at the scene.
The following day, on Sunday, Jan. 25, Gynae Kendall, 25, was arrested and charged with concealment of a human corpse, according to the NYPD statement.
The woman is the mother of the child, ABC7 and the New York Daily News reported.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will now determine the cause of death. An investigation remains ongoing.
It is unclear whether Kendall has retained an attorney who can speak on her behalf.
