NEED TO KNOW

  • The discovery of a woman’s decapitated body has sparked massive protests in Turkey
  • The victim’s head and legs were not immediately recovered by investigators
  • Two men were arrested while allegedly trying to flee the country. A third man was arrested later

Authorities in Turkey have identified three suspects in the brutal slaying of a 37-year-old woman whose mutilated remains were found in a garbage bin over the weekend.

The victim, whose name has not been publicly announced, was a woman of Uzbek nationality, AFP reported, citing local Turkish news outlets. Her head and legs had been cut off, the outlets reported.

The woman’s body had been wrapped in a sheet when it was found by a paper collector on Saturday, Jan. 24, in Istanbul. Her legs and head were not immediately recovered.

It’s not clear how the woman was identified.

Local authorities promptly arrested two men, who are also nationals of Uzbekistan, in connection with the killings, according to the AFP report. The men were arrested at the Istanbul Airport, where they were allegedly trying to flee the country.

A third man was arrested later, but it wasn’t clear if he is also of Uzbek nationality.

The gruesome killing has sparked widespread protests in Istanbul and the Turkish capital of Ankara.

“The perpetrators were so confident nothing would happen to them that they could just leave the body of the woman they killed in a bin in plain view,” said Isil Kurt of Stop Femicides, the organization that called a rally in Ankara, per AFP.

“Even though years pass and cities and names change, violence against women remains the same,” Kurt said.
