Woman Charged with the Murder of Her Young Daughter, Whose Death She Blamed on 'Voices' in Her Head

A Chicago mother allegedly told police that “voices” in her head led her to murder her young daughter. 

Marisol Vazquez, 37, has been charged with first-degree murder for the death of her child Lucia on Dec. 20 around 8:30 a.m. local time, according to NBC 5, CBS News and The Chicago Tribune. 

Per a police report obtained by CBS News, Vazquez was initially found naked on a bed with Lucia behind her.

When paramedics tried to perform life-saving measures on the child, who was not breathing, water came out of her mouth, the report said. Police also found water and clothing in a bathtub.

The Tribute reported that Lucia was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital. The outlet detailed that police identified the child as a 1-year-old, but prosecutors later said she was 21 months old.

PEOPLE reached out to the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office but did not hear back on Sunday, Jan. 5.

According to the arrest report, per CBS News, Vazquez made “incoherent statements about being trapped by electronics and that everyone has been raped” when she was questioned by detectives.

She also allegedly said, “We had to go in the water. We had to be with nature.”

Vazquez was eventually taken to Ascension St. Mary Hospital for a mental health evaluation, and officers later arrested her there on Thursday, Jan. 2, CBS News reported.

Vazquez then allegedly confessed to suffocating Lucia with a bedsheet. She also allegedly told detectives that “the voices were in her head and that the voices told her that she needs to kill herself with her daughter in order for the devil not to eat her daughter,” the outlet added.

Vazquez also told officials that she tried to drown herself but was unable to, so she then tried to cut herself, per CBS News.

The woman later appeared in court on Saturday, Jan. 4, when prosecutors said she confessed the killing to her sister and told her not to call the police, according to documents obtained by the Tribune. 

Vazquez is currently detained at the Cook County Jail. She is set to return to court on Tuesday, Jan. 7. It is not clear if she has legal representation to comment on her behalf.
