- A 24-year-old California woman has been arrested in connection with the death of her toddler
- Police say the woman was detained by UCLA police and told officers she injured her infant before leaving her alone in her nearby apartment
- Local outlets reported that the child died from injuries sustained from an attack that allegedly involved a frying pan
A California mother is being held on suspicion of murder after her 15-month-old child was discovered with “significant injuries” from an alleged attack that reportedly involved a frying pan and later died at a local hospital.
The incident unfolded shortly before noon local time on Tuesday when Carmen Anita DeGregg was detained by UCLA police before allegedly “making statements indicating she had harmed her child and left the child inside an apartment” nearby, the Santa Monica Police Department said in a news release.
“Officers responded to the residence where an infant was located inside an apartment with significant injuries,” police said. “Santa Monica Fire Department personnel responded and transported the infant to a local area hospital, where the child was later pronounced deceased.”
Santa Monica Police said DeGregg, 24, was then taken into custody and booked at the Santa Monica Jail.
While police did not reveal the identities of the mother and her child, arrest records reviewed by PEOPLE show DeGregg is the only person arrested Tuesday who was charged with homicide. In addition, the arrest records show DeGregg was charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance.
Local KABC, My News LA, and local Fox 11 also reported DeGregg’s identity while the latter identified her child as 15 months old at the time of her death. The outlets also reported that the infant allegedly died as a result of injuries sustained during an assault that involved a frying pan.
One neighbor told Fox 11 they heard “screams” over the weekend but did not know if that was when the assault occurred.
“It’s pretty bad,” neighbor Fred Moynier told Fox 11, telling the news station he watched first responders bring the toddler outside on a gurney and begin to do chest compressions while trying to save the child.
“Why would a mother do that?” Moynier pondered.
The outlet reported that the child’s father was questioned by police at the scene but was not arrested. Neighbors told Fox 11 the man appeared extremely distraught and emotional while speaking with officers at the scene.
PEOPLE has reached out to the Santa Monica Police Department for more information regarding the case but did not immediately receive a response from department officials on Wednesday morning.

Santa Monica Police said in its statement Tuesday that the infant’s “cause and manner of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner” at a later date, while detectives from the Santa Monica Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division continue to investigate the alleged murder.
DeGregg is currently in custody at the Santa Monica Jail and is being held on $2 million bond, jail records reviewed by PEOPLE show. The 24-year-old is scheduled to be arraigned in court on the homicide charge on Jan. 8.
