  • In May 2025, former NFL star Antonio Brown was allegedly involved in a shooting outside a celebrity boxing match in Miami, Fla.
  • Following the incident, he claimed on X that he was “jumped by multiple individuals” and also said he was “temporarily detained” by police
  • On Nov. 6, Brown was extradited to the U.S. and is now facing a charge of second-degree attempted murder with a firearm

Former NFL star Antonio Brown is heading to trial for his alleged role in a May 2025 shooting.

Brown, who played nine seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before brief stints with the Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has faced multiple legal issues since his 2019 release from the Raiders.

Most recently, authorities in Miami issued an arrest warrant for Brown in June 2025 on a charge of attempted murder, following his involvement in the shooting, which occurred in May outside a celebrity boxing match in Miami, per documents obtained by The Washington Post.

Following the incident, the football player addressed the “boxing event that happened last night” in a post on X, alleging that he was “jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me.”

Several months later, Brown was taken into custody on Nov. 6, and is now facing a charge of second-degree attempted murder with a firearm.

So, what did Antonio Brown allegedly do? Here’s everything to know about why the former NFL star is facing an attempted murder charge.

Brown was allegedly involved in a May 2025 shooting

On May 17, 2025, Brown was allegedly involved in a shooting incident that happened after a celebrity boxing event hosted by streamer Adin Ross.

In video footage shared on X, Brown is allegedly seen fighting with several individuals before the group relocated to a nearby alley. PEOPLE previously reported that Brown could be seen running toward the group while holding something in his hand, just seconds before a loud sound resembling gunshots is heard.

Additional videos on X that show other angles include bystanders seemingly reacting. Seconds before the gunshots are heard, one person can be heard saying, “Oh my god, he has a gun.”

WPLG reported that Brown was seen in handcuffs following the incident, though no arrests were made then because police were unable to locate a victim.

He alleged that he was “jumped by multiple individuals” and suffered from CTE

Later that day, Brown addressed the altercation while appearing on Ross’ Kick livestream, alleging he had been “jumped by multiple individuals” and suffered from CTE.

“I got CTE, I blacked out,” he said on the stream. “I blacked out, Adin. I don’t know what happened.”

He commented further in a post on X shortly after, writing, “Contrary to some video circulating, Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED.”

Brown was extradited in November 2025

Although a warrant was issued for his arrest in June following the shooting, Brown wasn’t taken into custody until November 2025.

On Nov. 6, he was extradited from Dubai to the U.S. after being taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service and brought to Essex County Correctional Facility in New Jersey, a police spokesperson confirmed with PEOPLE.

“Following a thorough investigation … Antonio Brown (AB) has been identified as the shooter,” the Miami Police Department wrote in a statement to PEOPLE. “This is just another example of the relentless work and dedication of Miami Police Detectives, working closely with Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, and U.S. Marshals to identify and arrest those who commit crimes in the City of Miami.”

According to an arrest warrant detailing the shooting, Brown is accused of grabbing a handgun from a security staffer after the boxing match and firing two shots at a man he had been in a fistfight with earlier, per ESPN.

The man was identified as Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, who told investigators one of the bullets grazed his neck, per the outlet.

Now that Brown has been extradited to the U.S., he is expected to be moved to Miami, where the shooting took place.

There, he faces a charge of second-degree attempted murder with a firearm stemming from the May 2025 shooting. As of Nov. 7, a trial date has not been set.

Brown has faced legal issues in the past

Brown’s latest charges are not the only legal issues he has faced. In 2019, the former football pro was accused of sexually assaulting former trainer Britney Taylor on three separate occasions.

Brown denied the allegations, later countersuing Taylor and claiming that her suit was in retaliation after he declined to invest more than $1.6 million in her gymnastics business. The case was settled in April 2021.

Then, in 2020, the NFL suspended Brown, who was then a free agent, for eight games after he violated its personal conduct policy on multiple occasions.

He was charged with burglary with assault, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, and criminal mischief after a dispute with a moving truck driver. Brown pleaded no contest and received two years of probation, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. In October 2023, he was arrested for failing to pay court-ordered child support to Wiltrice Jackson, the mother of his eldest daughter, and was released after posting a $15,000 bond.
