A 27-year-old Florida deputy was killed while responding to a car crash.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) announced on Friday, Nov. 7, that one of its Kendall District deputies died after he was “shot during an altercation.”

The officer, identified as Devin Jaramillo, “responded to a traffic crash,” where he was “was brutally attacked” and “murdered,” MDSO Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said during a press conference, per CBS News and WBLT.

“He gave the ultimate sacrifice, his life, defending us, defending you, and we need to understand as a society and as a community that that is just unacceptable,” Cordero-Stutz added of Jaramillo.

Sources told CBS News that when the deputy responded to the traffic incident, a struggle began and Jaramillo was shot.

The outlet and the Miami Herald, citing sources, reported that the suspect was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His identity has not been made public.

Police, the outlets added, are now questioning a second person in connection with the incident. Their identity has also not been shared.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The MDSO did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
