Several months after a U.S. Army soldier was stabbed nearly 70 times off base in Tennessee, two people — including her husband — have been charged in connection with her death.

Katia Dueñas Aguilar, 23, a private first class stationed at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, was found dead at a residence in Clarksville, Tenn., in May 2024, according to the Clarksville Police Department.

CBS News reported at the time that an autopsy report revealed Dueñas Aguilar had suffered 68 stabs wounds.

Following a months-long investigation, a grand jury indicted Sofia Rodas, 35, on one count of first-degree murder and a count of tampering with evidence, according to the police report.

Dueñas Aguilar’s husband, 40-year-old Reynaldo Salinas Cruz, was charged with tampering with evidence.

Both suspects were already in federal custody on unrelated charges, police said. It was not immediately clear if Rodas or Salinas Cruz have entered pleas.

Clarksville police did not specify what led to the suspects being charged, though they noted that the pair were extradited to Montgomery County, Tenn., in February.

Dueñas Aguilar was a member of the 101st Airborne Division.

“We will continue to prioritize our support and resources to Pfc. Dueñas Aguilar’s family during this difficult time,” the 101st said in a statement following her death. “Honoring the fallen is one of our most sacred responsibilities. Those rendering honors and attending the funeral include Pfc. Dueñas Aguilar’s friends, fellow soldiers, and commanders from the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, where she served as an Information Technology Specialist.”
