George Carroll’s children had always been told their father had left to get cigarettes and never returned.
For decades, Mike Carroll — living in his childhood home in Lake Grove, N.Y., on Long Island — and his siblings were desperate for answers as to what happened to their father.
The mystery seemed unsolvable after their mother died in 1998, having revealed very little about her former husband, a Korean War veteran who hadn’t been seen since the early 1960s.
But a trip to a psychic and a months-long excavation effort in Mike’s basement helped uncover a shocking twist, which is the subject of an upcoming ID documentary, The Secrets We Bury, premiering on Dec. 16.
PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the trailer. In it, Mike Carroll recalls accompanying his sister to a psychic, despite his skepticism, years after their father went missing, with his car still in the driveway.
“The psychic goes, ‘Oh, the M word: murder. He is in the basement,'” Carroll recalls in the trailer.
Carroll then made it his mission to find out what happened to his father.
“I’m gonna go find him,” Carroll says. “I’m gonna dig.”
Carroll’s own sons assisted their father, digging in his basement for months, leading to the shocking discovery in 2018.

NBC New York reported at the time that Carroll’s sons eventually found human remains several feet below the basement of the home. They were confirmed to belong to George Carroll.
The Secrets We Bury features interviews with Mike Carroll and three of his siblings, as well as his two sons, Chris and Michael Jr., and delves into what could have happened to George, whose death was investigated as a homicide, per ABC New York.
In addition to its airing on ID, The Secrets We Bury will stream on HBO Max.
