Upon arriving at the home, police located a 12-year-old male who had sustained a gunshot wound. The boy was “transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, where he died a short time later,” according to the release.

Police then began a search for the boy’s 15-year-old brother, whom they called a “suspect.”

CPD updated their initial release the afternoon of Saturday, Jan. 11, and stated that the teen had since “turned himself in to authorities and is no longer at large.”

The teen has been charged with reckless homicide, a second-class felony, per the update.

Police did not share how the teen obtained the gun. CPD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

While speaking to Cleveland 19, neighbors of the family said they were at a loss for words over the tragedy.

“It’s heartbreaking because I’ve got a 12-year-old as well,” one neighbor told the outlet. “I didn’t know them very well, but I used to see the little boy outside playing. Being a kid.”

Police Chief John Gabbard also shared a statement on the incident, calling it “absolutely heartbreaking for the family and a tragedy for the community,” per Cleveland 19 and News 5 Cleveland.
