A retired police officer in Orlando, Fla., was shot and killed on New Year’s Day in an incident that police say stemmed from a “family dispute.”
Officers responded to a residence around 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1, and found a victim on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, according to a press release shared by the Orlando Police Department. The victim was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Police identified the victim as 65-year-old Dennis Turner — a former officer who served with the department for 23 years and retired in 2018.
At this time, investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a family dispute, the release states. A suspect who they say fled the scene was later arrested.
The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Jeffrey London, faces charges of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, police said, per the press release. It’s unclear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.

Orlando Rolón, who was police chief at the time, said the department’s policy required officers to seek approval before arresting children younger than 12 years old, NBC News reported.
