NEED TO KNOW

  • Michael David McKee was arrested in connection with the December killings of Ohio dentist Spencer Tepe and his wife Monique Tepe
  • He faces two counts of aggravated murder
  • Police say McKee was the hooded person of interest seen on surveillance footage walking near the Tepes’ home

Michael David McKee, the 39-year-old surgeon arrested and charged with murder after the killings of Monique and Spencer Tepe, is believed to be the figure seen walking near the couple’s home on surveillance footage, police said Wednesday.

McKee was arrested on Saturday, Jan. 10, in Rockford, Ill., nearly two weeks after the Tepes were found fatally shot inside their residence in Columbus, Ohio.

McKee, a vascular surgeon based in Rockford, is awaiting extradition to Ohio to face charges of aggravated murder. McKee has said through his public defender he plans to plead not guilty to the charges.

Here’s How Police Identified Ex-Husband Suspect in Ohio Dentist and Wife’s Murders

Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant said at a press conference Wednesday that McKee was believed to be the hooded, shadowy “person of interest” seen walking through a snowy alley near the Tepes’ home.

Bryant, who was mostly hushed about specific details to the investigation, said that a vehicle linked to McKee was seen arriving in the area of the Tepes’ residence just before the killings are believed to have taken place, and leaving the area shortly after.

Further, Bryant said officers had recovered weapons from his home, including one whose ballistics were preliminarily linked to the homicides.

“This was a targeted attack,” Bryant alleged. “This was a domestic violence-related attack.”
