Following his arrest, the Diocese of Little Rock’s bishop announced in a statement that Thessing had been suspended from his position as a pastor at St. Michael Church in West Memphis, pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
Bishop Anthony B. Taylor called the allegations “disturbing” but noted that Thessing “has many supporters — many whose lives he has positively impacted.”
“He is well-loved by many for bringing them and their families closer to God. During this difficult time, I would ask every person of good will — Father Thessing’s supporters and detractors alike — to keep him, your parishes and your school in your prayers.”
According to police, Thessing is charged with two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. Jail records show Thessing has since been released on bond, WREG and Fox 13 report.
It’s unclear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.
