Authorities in New York have charged a woman with murder after she was found in her home alongside her unresponsive one-year-old.
The child, identified by New York City police as 15-month-old Charlie Ramraykha, was found deceased in a Queens, N.Y. home on Monday, Dec. 29.
Officers responding to a call about an assault found Charlie unresponsive alongside his mother, 28-year-old Nicole Boodhai, who had her wrists slashed, the NYPD said in a statement.
Both were transported to a local hospital where Charlie was pronounced dead while Boodhai was in stable condition.
A neighbor described hearing disturbing screaming by a child around the time of the killing, ABC 7 NY reported.
“The first scream was a man, for sure, and it was a very loud, aggressive scream and the second one I heard sounded like a child, a child screaming in fear,” neighbor Fateemah Akter told the outlet.
Boodhai allegedly called Charlie’s father and told him she’d killed the child, The New York Times reported, citing a police report. She attempted suicide by slashing her wrists, officials said.

The cause and manner of death for Charlie were not available, and the medical examiner’s office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further information.
Investigators found pills next to the child in the bathroom where he was found, and they believe he ingested them, according to the report cited by The New York Times.
