A Colorado sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to three years in prison after he was convicted of criminally negligent homicide in the 2022 shooting death of a man who called 911 while experiencing a mental health crisis.

Andrew Buen, a former deputy with the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, was sentenced by a judge on Monday, April 14, according to The New York Times, CBS News and Colorado Community Media.

Early on the morning of June 10, 2022, Christian Glass, 22, called 911 after his car got stuck in an embankment near Silver Plume, Colo.

Glass’ family has said he was suffering a mental health crisis at the time, CBS reported.

Glass, the Times reported, citing a 911 call, at one point told a dispatcher that he feared “skinwalkers” and that he was afraid to get out of the car.

After he refused to leave his car for more than an hour, police broke Glass’ window, at which point he grabbed a knife he had inside, CBS reported.

Glass was then tased before Buen shot him five times, the outlet reported.

Buen was first tried in 2024, and found guilty of reckless endangerment, but the jury deadlocked on a charge of second-degree murder, the Times reported.

In a second trial in February, Buen was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide, the outlets reported.

Following Buen’s initial indictment, the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office said it had terminated him.

“I wish I could take it all back,” Buen said in court, according to CBS.

The outlet reported that Glass’ family had settled a $19 million lawsuit with local authorities.

“The fact that he was taken off in an orange suit, handcuffed, is important,” Glass’ mother, Sally Glass, told the Times. “Money doesn’t bring Christian back. Quite frankly, him going to prison doesn’t bring Christian back.”
