- Derek Martin spent a lot of time with his former stepdaughter, Chloe Bashford, and her husband and children
- On the morning of June 9, 2023, he snapped over a fight about money, police said
- He killed the couple and then picked up their children from school, and took them for food at McDonald’s
A man who killed his former stepdaughter and her husband before calmly taking their four children to McDonald’s has been found guilty of the murders.
On Friday, Oct. 24, Derek Martin, 67, of Brighton, East Sussex, England, was convicted of murdering Chloe Bashford, 30, and her husband Josh Bashford, 33, at their home in Newhaven, East Sussex, in June 2023, Sussex Police said in a statement.
Martin remained close with Chloe and her husband after he and her mother split up, prosecutors said during the trial, the BBC reports.
On June 9, 2023, Martin was cleaning a window at the couple’s home when he “just flipped” over an argument with Chloe about money, police said in the statement.
At 12:15 p.m. that day, Martin attacked Chloe with a hammer, hitting her on the top of her head, Prosecutor Julian Evans told jurors during Martin’s trial, the BBC, The Telegraph and The Times reported.
“Then he went to the kitchen to retrieve a large knife. Having done so, he repeatedly stabbed Chloe with that knife, causing severe injuries from which she died,” Evans said in court.
When Josh got home five minutes later, Martin met him at the door with a knife and chased him upstairs, stabbing him and then strangling him with a belt or a rope, Evans said.
Now, chilling video released by authorities shows Martin taking the couple’s children to McDonald’s after the murder.
Immediately after the murders, Martin changed his clothes, picked up the couple’s four children from school, and took them for a drink at Costa and then for food at McDonald’s in Newhaven.

In the videos, seen below, he appears calm and is carrying on as usual.
He picked up the children because he wanted to “look after them,” prosecutors said, the BBC reports.
He threw Chloe’s mobile phone into the bushes of a nearby Sainsbury’s and then drove the children to the home of his former wife, Chloe’s mother, in Brighton. After that, he drank “some beers from a shop in Whitehawk” on the seafront in Brighton, police said in the statement.
Shortly after, he walked into the Brighton police station and told officers, “I’ve killed two people,” as seen in the video.
The video also shows footage of Martin having breakfast with Chloe at the same Costa restaurant where he later took her children, police said.
He was arrested, but the trial didn’t begin for more than two years.
During the trial, Martin “admitted causing the deaths of Chloe and Josh Bashford, but denied murder due to diminished responsibility resulting from a depressive disorder,” police said in the statement.
In the end, the jury found him guilty of two counts of murder following a three-week trial.

He remains in custody and will be sentenced on Nov. 6.
After the trial, Elaine Sturges, Chloe’s mother and Martin’s ex-wife, said he was “like Jekyll and Hyde,” and had severe mood swings, the BBC reports.

“He had a temper, but I never thought he’d be capable of doing anything like this,” she said. “I would never have let him near Chloe and Josh if I thought it was like this.”
Chloe’s father, Jason Godden, said he was “absolutely devastated” for his grandchildren and could not believe they have “lost both their parents over this idiot that’s called himself grandad for some reason,” the BBC reports.
“Any verdict or punishment” for Martin “would never make any difference” and he deserved “everything he gets,” Josh’s mother, Sharon Bashford told the BBC.
