More details are emerging about the suspect in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
After an intense 33-hour manhunt, authorities took Tyler Robinson, 22, into custody in St. George, Utah, on Thursday night, FBI Director Kash Patel said at a press conference on Friday, Sept. 12.
“We got him,” Utah Governor Spencer Cox said at the press conference.
Kirk, 31, was shot in front of a large crowd during a rally for Turning Point USA, the organization he founded, at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
Robinson is being held without bail at a Utah jail on several charges, including aggravated murder, according to authorities.
Robinson was enrolled in the electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College — one of 16 Utah System of Higher Education institutions, the Utah Board of Higher Education said in a statement posted online.
Robinson is a third-year student in the apprenticeship program at the school, the statement said.
He grew up in Washington, Utah, about five miles from the technical college, which is about a 3 1/2-hour drive from Utah Valley University.
In 2021, Robinson attended Utah State University for one semester and received college credit through Utah Tech University from 2019 to 2021 while he was in high school, the statement said.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting.
They believe Robinson allegedly fired at Kirk from the roof of the student services building 200 yards away from the event while Kirk was speaking.
Patel later released surveillance footage showing a figure in black running across the roof, climbing down the building and then dropping to the ground before walking quickly toward a wooded area off campus.
After the shooting, authorities released photos of the suspect wearing a black shirt with a logo, a dark-colored hat and sunglasses.

A family member of Robinson’s reached out to a family friend saying that Robinson had “confessed to them or implied” that he’d committed the shooting, Cox said at the press conference.
Cox said authorities don’t have any information that might lead to any additional arrests.
