Five people were arrested in connection with a kidnapping in Florida that resulted in a car chase across multiple cities.

According to reports from CBS Miami, NBC Miami and WPLG, the incident began just before 1:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, Nov. 15, at a McDonald’s in Davie, located about 10 miles outside Fort Lauderdale.

A group of suspects allegedly approached a victim inside a McDonald’s, took his cell phone and told him to get in their vehicle if he wanted to get the phone back, the Davie Police Department (DPD) told the outlets.

The group then drove off, taking the victim, whose name has not been made public, to the 700 block of Northwest 9th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. There, the group allegedly forced the man out of their car and hit him. The victim then ran away from the scene and was able to call 911, telling dispatchers that he had been kidnapped.

“He fled, stopped a person in the area and called 911 to report that he was kidnapped from Davie,” a DPD spokesperson said, per WPLG.

Police from Davie’s neighboring cities were looped in to the incident, and Fort Lauderdale Police eventually found the suspects’ vehicle using GPS tracking information from the victim’s phone, the outlets reported.

Police from Davie and Fort Lauderdale — as well as Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies — gave chase, following the car to nearby Pompano Beach. In footage obtained by the outlets, the white SUV could be seen crashing into a pole. Police said the suspects then fled the scene on foot.

Video of the scene obtained by the outlets showed armed police swarming an apartment building across the street from where the SUV crashed.

Three adult suspects — identified as 30-year-old Tracey Ross, 18-year-old Lamar Perry and 18-year-old Timothy Brown — were arrested and taken into custody. The outlets reported that two minors were also taken into custody and transported to the county’s juvenile assessment center.

According to CBS Miami, Ross has been charged with kidnapping, inflicting bodily harm or terrorizing a victim; fleeing at high speed; and resisting an officer. Perry has been charged with kidnapping, inflicting bodily harm or terrorizing victim; grand theft motor vehicle; resisting an officer; possession of a firearm by a minor; and burglary.

Brown was charged with kidnapping and inflicting bodily harm or terrorizing victim, though CBS Miami reported that his role in the incident is currently unclear.

Several of the suspects’ family members spoke in court, including Brown’s mother.

“I’ve never seen my son get in trouble or do anything like this,” she said, per WPLG. “I don’t know who he was with and what happened. So, I’m still in shock.”
