NEED TO KNOW

  • A DoorDash driver was charged with DUI and driving with a suspended license in Cape Coral, Florida, police say
  • Police say that officers then delivered the order that the driver still had in the vehicle
  • The driver allegedly had nearly double the legal Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) in Florida when he was arrested

Police arrested a DoorDash driver on suspicion of driving under the influence — and then officers delivered the customer’s order themselves, according to local law enforcement.

Luis Alania Estrella was arrested and charged with a DUI and driving with a suspended license in Cape Coral, Fla. on Nov. 20, according to a press release from the Cape Coral Police Department. The CCPD explained that “officers were dispatched to the area of Skyline Blvd and Cape Coral Pkwy following reports of a man appearing unconscious behind the wheel of a vehicle stopped at a traffic light.”

Amid the arrest, police say that they stepped in to complete the DoorDash order. “In an effort to assist the community member awaiting their meal, one of the responding officers took the initiative to deliver the food order to its final destination. The actions of the officer helped ensure the resident received the meal safely and without unnecessary delay,” the press release continued.

CCPD allegedly found that Estrella, 25, had a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.15%, making it nearly double the legal limit of 0.8% in Florida, according to ABC News.

PEOPLE has reached out to CCPD and DoorDash for comment on the incident.

When reached for comment by PEOPLE, DoorDash said that the driver had been “permanently removed” from its platform.

“DoorDash has zero tolerance for driving under the influence – every single Dasher is required to follow the law, period. This individual’s access to the DoorDash platform has been permanently removed,” a DoorDash spokesperson said. “We’re grateful to local law enforcement for keeping the community safe and going above and beyond to deliver this customer’s dinner.

Police bodycam footage obtained by WBBH shows Estrella slumped over the wheel in his Toyota vehicle.

“Having that officer stop by, I’m sure the people were not expecting to have an officer show up at their door, but in this case, hopefully they were happy that they were there,” Officer Mercedes Simonds told local NBC and ABC affiliate Gulf Coast News.
