  • A car drove into a terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on Friday, Jan. 23
  • According to airport officials, six people were treated at the scene
  • The cause of the crash is currently unknown and the driver’s identity has not been shared publicly

At least six people required medical care after a car drove into a terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).

At around 7:30 p.m. local time on Friday, Jan. 23, a vehicle “drove into the entrance” of the McNamara Terminal at DTW and hit a “ticket counter,” said the Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) Police Department in a statement shared on X.

Six people were treated at the scene following the incident, officials confirmed.

The driver of the car, who has not been publicly identified, was subsequently taken into custody. The WCAA said the cause of the crash is currently unknown.

Officials told Fox 2 Detroit that the driver may have suffered a mental episode. It is unknown whether the driver will face charges in connection with the incident.

A video obtained by Metro Detroit News appears to show a dark-colored Mercedes smashed into a Delta ticket counter as bystanders at the airport watch from afar.

In additional clips, the driver of the car, who seems to be wearing a black Detroit Lions jersey, is seen yelling something incoherently as airport security attempts to detain him.

Additional footage obtained by CBS News shows the impact of the crash, including the broken ticket kiosk and the entrance to the terminal, which the car went through in order to get inside. Firefighters are seen moving aside broken door frames that were barely left on their hinges.

Delta Airlines told CBS News in a statement that no injuries were reported, though three employees were checked by emergency personnel after encountering debris. The airline also noted to the outlet that there was no operational impact.
