  • The shooting occurred near the White House
  • A suspect is in custody

Two National Guard soldiers were shot in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

According to the Associated Press, the shooting occurred near the White House.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey posted on X at 3:42 p.m. that the two Guardsmen, both from his state, had died, but about a half hour later said he was receiving “conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members.”

“Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community,” said Morrisey.

“Our entire state grieves with their families, their loved ones, and the Guard community. West Virginia will never forget their service or their sacrifice, and we will demand full accountability for this horrific act,” Morrissey wrote.

A suspect is in custody, per AP.

President Donald Trump, who is in Florida, posted earlier that the gunman was severely wounded.

Members of the U.S. Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies respond to a shooting near the White House on November 26, 2025 in Washington, DC.

“The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price,” he posted on social media. “God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!”

The names of the guardsmen have not yet been released, per the New York Times.

Emergency responders and police swarmed around the entrance of a hotel just northwest of the White House, the Times reported. Several blocks were cordoned off as emergency personnel worked on victims, according to the Times.

Trump ordered the National Guard deployed to D.C. in August in an effort to wage war on what he described as rampant crime in the nation’s capital, federalizing the city’s police force and sending hundreds of armed soldiers to patrol its streets. Guard troops have since been deployed to other cities as well, like Chicago and Portland.

A federal judge last week ordered the Guard’s deployment suspended in D.C., but the ruling was stayed for three weeks, per the Times.
