W.R. Case and Sons Cutlery Co. announced plans to open a satellite facility near Knoxville, Tenn.

“This added resource will perform select finishing and packaging operations, expanding Case’s operational capacity to support the company’s unprecedented growth,” company officials said in a press release. “The decision reflects increasing demand for Case products, the Knoxville region’s strong and skilled labor pool, and the brand’s established following across the U.S”…

…Case’s headquarters in Bradford will remain the heart of the company’s manufacturing operations and will continue to expand its capabilities and workforce, according to company officials.

That last point drew quite the bit of discussion on the Bradford Era (the local paper) Facebook page. Mostly predicting that this is just the beginning of further moves out of Pennsylvania. I am not sure about that.  It is more than just moving the manufacturing equipment. Moving a skilled workforce is even harder.

For the time being, I am going to take the company at its word.  Case already had a small presence in Knoxville, and this sounds like it is going to be distribution related. Knoxville is ideally situated for this, at the junction of I75 and I40. Add to this the fact that Tennessee is one of the most business-friendly states in the country, and the expansion makes a lot of sense.

You can find the whole article here, but it is paywalled. There isn’t much more than is mentioned in the Facebook post.
