Wyatt Baker described, “At the molecular level, the atoms inside this steel are angry. They were just heated to over 1,600 degrees (Fahrenheit) repeatedly and banged with my ball-peen hammer. They are not happy.” Baker was communicating a moment in the process of creating a custom-made knife.
His description was exact and full of imagery. Many people use procedures every day in their work and personal lives.
Few appreciate the physical consequences of a process like the young knife-maker. Baker’s explanation explored the balance between hardness and malleability, strength and brittleness.
Standing in his workshop just west of Yantis one gets the impression that making knives is a whole lot more complicated than one may think.
I always love when I find these human interest stories. I do not know Wyatt Baker, but I love how pieces like this expose a broader audience to the craft. Anything that helps normalize knives and knifemaking deserves our full support.
