The white cross with red surround has long been a sacred badge in the world of knives, indicating the timeless dependability and versatility of the Swiss Army knife. The latest multifunctional pocket knife to float onto our computer screen isn’t a white cross-badged Swiss Army knife, but it wears an equally proud badge of origin and heritage. The newly released Böker Treebrand Camp Knife is a purely German design, its roots winding back hundreds of years to the 17th century.

Boker isn’t just older than Victorinox, it is one of the oldest knife companies in the world. But it is a little more complicated than that. Boker’s history is almost as labyrinthine as Case’s. And in some interpretations, Boker USA (Founded 1837) is older than Boker Solingen (1869) and even controlled the German branch’s trademarks post WWII. But then Boker USA is not an unbroken lineage either with the current brand a subsidiary of the German branch incorporated in 1986 . So who really knows?
