For the past few years, MagnaCut steel has had a stranglehold on the knifemaking industry. Often referred to as a “super steel,” it is beloved for its unique blend of performance, reliability, durability, strength, corrosion resistance and more.
But for 2026, MagnaCut’s inventor has finally launched a potential successor. Called MagnaMax, it had been quietly teased by brands and artisans at shows and conventions before its official unveiling this year.
In fact, it’s already available in quite a few knives from some noteworthy brands.
Magnacut is great stuff. I can definitely tell the difference over “pedestrian” steels like S30V, but once you go much higher than that, I can’t really tell the difference in use. Cru-Wear is identifiable by the fact it is a pain to sharpen, but that is not unique to that steel. Others leave the same impression.
