While it shares a name with a shapeshifting alien race from Doctor Who, the incoming Civivi Zygon seems much more benign – especially if you like fidget folders. This knife comes in some cool material configs and wears its crossbar lock on the spine.
A flick of a thumbstud (or wrist in conjunction with the crossbar lock; more below) will send the Zygon’s handsome drop point blade into the open position. It’s broad and flat ground, measuring 3.24 inches and thus fills the all-purpose EDC role with aplomb, including, perhaps, more demanding “EDC+” work. The blade steel is Nitro-V, a steel that has proven itself over the years to be a rock-solid formula – well, maybe not as solid as an actual rock, but hardy, resilient to rust and other kinds of catastrophic damage, and responsive to sharpening.
The handle is comprised of straight lines, with a large trapezoidal cutout beneath the guard to catch the first two fingers and help users locate their grip. We mentioned the material options, and indeed there are interesting ones offered here: the natural G-10 variant is blue glow-in-the-dark, the black G-10 model sports a stylish white G-10 bolster, while the damascus flavor comes with gray G-10 and a carbon fiber overlay bolster; but our absolute favorite model has to be the orange and black vortex Micarta Zygon, which has a trippy, 90s screensaver aesthetic. Good stuff.
The Zygon is also doing something interesting mechanically. It comes with a crossbar lock but, rather than being situated in the pivot region of the scales, this version is located on the spine of the knife. It’s a cool twist on a proven mechanism, and thankfully it doesn’t alter one of the crossbar lock’s best characteristics: its ambidexterity. Speaking of, the pocket clip, Civivi’s preferred loop over, deep carry number, is swappable to either side. In the pocket the Zygon should be fairly discreet, with an entirely reasonable total weight of 3.37 oz.
