Good Evening One and All, and welcome to another exciting edition of KNIFE Magazine’s interview series, 5 from the Grinder. Tonight we bring you Joseph Nikoloudis, of JN Handmade Knives. I don’t know Joseph personally. He responded to one of our calls for knifemakers to participate. If you are a maker yourself and would like to be featured in a future edition of 5ftG, you can find out more at this link.
Please introduce yourself and let us know what led you to making/designing knives
I am a professional knifemaker from Greece. I am 58 years old and have been making knives for the last 10 years, assisted by my elder daughter Irene. I had always wanted to make knives but I was not sure about the Greek legislation on the matter A policeman friend of mine explained the law to me – it is 100% legal to make knives, you are only not allowed to stab people with them 🙂
From then on I haven’t stopped making knives. I have made more than 1000 so far.
What knifemaker(s) or designer(s) have had the biggest influence on you? Do you have any mentors?
Bob Loveless of course. Bill Moran, Bob Kramer, Kyle Royer, Cas Brothers (I just love them), Denis Mura, Wayne Morgan. There are so many great ones out there. My greatest mentor has been YouTube.
What is your favorite knife pattern or style from history?
Bowies and Cretan knives are my favorite knife patterns from history.
What is the next big thing in knifemaking? / What direction do you see the industry going?
As it concerns knife patterns, I can’t see groundbreaking differences in the future. I mostly feel that the biggest changes are going to concern materials (Steels and synthetic handle materials primarily.
Is there a knife from your lineup that you feel best exhibits who you are as a knifemaker/designer in terms of design elements, aesthetic or techniques used?
Oh yes, it is this stainless steel Damascus bowie I made some time ago.
What is your EDC and why?
My EDC is this one here:
Because it is versatile, very sharp, made from an exquisite steel (M390) and it perfectly fits my hand.
