The first brass casings struck the concrete with a loud pinging sound, and I couldn’t help but smile. Nothing beats a real side-by-side comparison. Spec sheets and press releases can only tell you so much. The real answers come when you put rounds downrange.
On this day, I had two pistols on deck: the Springfield Armory Hellcat Pro Comp stock with an Olight SE Red Dot versus a custom-built Hellcat Pro from Floyd Custom Shop (FCS). The custom Hellcat Pro was decked out with an Enforcer slide and an Apex Tactical trigger, and a Vortex Defender-CCW red dot sight.
To keep variables to a minimum, I used Sim-X Range-Core for the bulk of the live-fire drills — group work, timed strings, and extended magazine cycling. Range-Core delivers consistent, practice-oriented performance with the same ballistic fingerprint as defensive loads.
I also brought along some paper silhouette targets and a Shooter’s Global Timer. Although the weather was cold, clear skies made it a perfect day to let the guns speak for themselves.
First Impressions
The Pro Comp made a solid first impression. The 3.7” hammer-forged barrel, with an integrated port, maintains a good balance. The Adaptive Grip Texture locked in securely without chewing up my hands.
The Floyd Custom Shop Hellcat Pro kept the same Hellcat Pro frame, but looked and felt different from the start. The “Enforcer” slide porting and barrel design creates a sleek racing look for the gun, while the Apex trigger system suggests its high-performance capabilities. Racking the slide was smooth, almost buttery.
This type of porting system is designed to reduce muzzle rise while still providing quicker follow-up shots. The Apex Trigger was designed to provide a responsive but quick trigger reset. I could tell that this Hellcat was “tuned” for fast-paced shooting.
Accuracy on Paper
I began my shooting sequence with slow-fire groups placed at distances ranging from 7 yards.
The results showed that the stock Hellcat Comp produced consistent 2”–2.5” groups. The porting of the barrel kept the muzzle flat, which maintained a steady sight picture.
The Floyd Custom Shop Hellcat Pro’s accuracy at 7 yards remained almost identical to the OSP, but the Apex trigger system provided an even more fluid and expedited shooting experience.
At 15 yards, the stock Pro Comp groups widened slightly but stayed centered on the mass. The grip of the Floyd gun became more secure whenever I performed double-tap movements. The change was not overly dramatic, yet it was noticeable.
The consistency of the Sim-X Range-Core 9mm ensured the results weren’t ammo-driven. What I was seeing came from the platforms themselves.
Recoil and Timing
Next came the second most crucial things — recoil and timing. The Shooter’s Global SH Timer 2 helped me out with this, as I was able to program my drills from my phone. I performed controlled pairs and triples, as well as rapid-fire string sequences.
Comp OSP: Splits averaged 0.45–0.50 seconds. The compensator kept the muzzle steady, making it easier to regain proper sight recovery.
Floyd Custom Shop: Splits dropped to 0.40–0.45 seconds. Not dramatic, but still measurable. The porting and Apex trigger assisted with smooth, fast follow-up shots.

Both pistols had great control, trigger reset, and sight picture; however, the Floyd performed slightly better than the OSP. When I added lateral movements between targets, both pistols felt controllable, but the Floyd pistol edged out the Pro Comp with slightly smoother transitions.
Real-World Takeaways
The most obvious change became apparent after performing hundreds of rounds of the exercise.
The stock Hellcat Pro Comp is a phenomenal stock gun. The Pro Comp provides dependable operation with precise results, enabling users to start using it right away. For most concealed carriers, it’s more than enough. The Floyd Custom Shop Hellcat Pro enhances all this for slight, but still measurable, increases in performance.
Maintenance and Reliability
The testing revealed that the pistols functioned properly without any issues.
Stock Pro Comp: Fouling concentrated on the compensator. The cleaning process required a basic set of steps.
Floyd Custom Shop: Carbon built up around the slide ports, requiring a bit more detailed cleaning work. Still, no malfunctions or issues.
Conclusion
Both of the pistols are life-saving tools. Your choice between staying stock or further customizing an already excellent platform is based on your preference.
While first impressions tell part of the story, the real question is how the Hellcat Pro Comp stacks up against the Floyd Custom Shop Hellcat Pro in tangible categories. Looking at them side by side reveals where Springfield’s engineering shines and where minor refinements give even more of an edge.
