As Bob Dylan once sang, “The times, they are a-changin.” I remember an era where bolt-action pistols were associated mainly with long-range metallic silhouette shooting. Magnum handgun cartridges offered a good amount of up-close knock-down power where steel pigs and rams were concerned, but at 100 yards and beyond, they were found to be lacking. Indeed, it’s hard to beat the ballistic performance of a good rifle round.

I’d secretly wondered why the product category wasn’t more common. To me, the benefits of a “go anywhere” precision platform seemed self-evident. I’m happy to report that over the last 20 years, a good number of shooters seem to have come around to my way of thinking.

Far more than a niche product, the bolt-action pistol now curries favor with handgun hunters, shadetree ballisticians, those wanting a capable rig that can be stowed in a compact bag or case — and of course, anyone who desires a different shooting experience from the same-’ol, same-’ol.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before Springfield Armory entered this exciting space. New for Spring ’26 is the Model 2020 Heatseeker Pistol, built on the vaunted Model 2020 action and nestled in the cutting-edge Sharps Brothers chassis.

The Specs

The Model 2020 Heatseeker Pistol comes chambered in the ever-popular .308 Winchester (7.62×51 NATO). Like its bigger brothers, the receiver is engineered to be mega-tough and buttery smooth, thanks in no small part to wire-cut EDM raceways for its dual lug bolt. The Model 2020 Heatseeker pistol also features the very same spiralized, fluted 4140 tool steel bolt and the optimized extraction cam of the Model 2020 rifle.

Like the Model 2020 Heatseeker rifles, the pistol features a Sharps Brothers chassis to house the action. Machined from aircraft-grade aluminum, the chassis provides users with a number of M-Lok slots to accommodate accessories, along with two quick disconnect fittings per side that can be used as sling attachment points. The shortened handguard keeps the firearm combat and handy, and a Graphite Black Cerakote finish keeps it all low-key yet eye-catching.

The pistol features and AR-pattern B5 Systems P-Grip that is very well-designed. However, users will also be able to customize the receiver with any AR-15 compatible grip if they so choose. Like the Model 2020 rifles, the 2020 Heatseeker Pistol is fed by AICS-pattern magazines. It is a five-rounder in the case of the .308 pistol.

As with the other members of the Model 2020 family, the 2020 Heatseeker Pistol comes equipped with a TriggerTech adjustable trigger, allowing users to set a safe pull weight of anywhere between 2.5 and 5 lbs. without disassembly (and using nothing more than an Allen wrench).

Moving to the barrel, the 2020 Heatseeker Pistol features a 12” stainless steel barrel with a matching Cerakote finish. The barrel features a 1:10 twist, allowing it to effectively stabilize a wide variety of today’s most popular .308 loads. The barrel comes topped with Springfield Armory’s own SA Radial Brake to diminish perceived recoil. However, the device can be easily unscrewed and replaced with any suppressor or brake that mates with the 5/8×24 threading — or users can simply utilize the included thread cap if no attenuation to noise or recoil is desired.

Taking Stock

You’ll note the strip of Picatinny rail located on the rear of the pistol chassis. While braces these days are quite popular for large-format pistols, there is another interesting aspect to this — tied to a change that came about as of January 1, 2026. On that day, the $200 National Firearms Act (NFA) federal tax stamp necessary to create a short-barreled rifle (SBR) was reduced to $0 under President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.” It is now cheaper and more expeditious than ever before for shooters to file the paperwork needed to legally convert a bolt-action pistol like this into a very compact rifle with a fixed or folding stock in states where legally applicable.

However you configure this pistol, buyers are still recommended to consult with a knowledgeable firearms attorney before installation. Depending on local, state and federal laws, installation may convert the firearm into a restricted firearm, or one that runs afoul of the NFA.

This is not to say that users must necessarily affix anything like that to their Model 2020 Heatseeker Pistol — the gun is an exceptional and shootable platform right out of the box. Instead, it’s more accurate to say that a huge contingent of shooters will appreciate the gun’s adaptability to their needs and tastes.

Final Thoughts

While no shortage of shooters will find the Model 2020 Heatseeker Pistol to have both practical and tactical value, let’s not lose sight of the fact that this gun is flat-out fun. You’d be surprised by how fast a few hours melt away when it’s just you, a bolt-action pistol and a good rest, all working in tandem with one another to engage targets of opportunity out to a couple hundred yards. It’s a joy to ring steel, shuck out a spent case, and settle back behind the gun for another go.

The Model 2020 Heatseeker Pistol has an MSRP of $1,999. Whatever your designs for the platform, I think you’ll find that to be money well spent.
